Women into Engineering Event at the University of Derby

The University of Derby are hosting their 4th and very popular ‘Women in Engineering’ event, held on International Women’s Day, 8 March, 2018 from 6-9 pm. This event is especially helpful to students and parents to help them to understand the broad subject area of Engineering and the many rewarding careers that are available under the engineering umbrella. It is also of interest to careers teachers and subject teachers alike, as all of the speakers are from industry and will explain their journey and the qualifications and pathways they took to get there.

This is a really informative and inspirational evening for girls aged 14+ who may wish to pursue an engineering or technical career and want to know more about the qualifications and different routes to achieve that goal. Some may just want to find out more about the different types of engineering careers available and look at which study options at school, 6th form or college, Apprenticeship etc, will be essential for their chosen career or will enable them to access different STEM careers.

We have six, successful female engineers from a wide variety of engineering and technology disciplines. One of the speakers is a former JCB Academy learner and UK Apprentice of the Year, Holly Broadhurst. Each speaker gives a short and snappy 10 minute presentation about their career journey to date. Some speakers travelled a very linear route, others not so. This is important because there are many different routes into a variety of engineering disciplines and it is valuable to hear from those who have navigated successfully.

After the presentations, the audience will be invited to write their questions on a card to be submitted to the speakers as a panel. Refreshments will be served during the interval.
