Mental Health in Schools

Nearly half a million children** in the UK have no one to speak to at school when they are experiencing feelings of sadness or worry.

In a recent YouGov survey 1 in 10 (10%) children said they have no one to talk to in school when they are worried or sad. More than one in four (26%) also said that being worried or sad caused them to struggle to do their homework with 38% also saying it also caused them difficulty with going to sleep. 50% of mental health problems are established by age 14.

“Our survey provides shocking further evidence of the growing crisis in the mental health of children. Nearly half a million children** in the country have no one to speak to at school when they are experiencing feelings of sadness or worry. That is plainly unacceptable.” Dr Antonis Kousoulis, Associate Director at the Mental Health Foundation.

At The JCB Academy all learners are allocated a mentor. The mentors act as a key point of contact for supporting the learners social and emotional well-being on a daily basis. They also meet formally to set academic and personal targets that are communicated home through their mentor’s report.
