Duke of York Awards 2016

Technical talent gets royal recognition

Learners from The JCB Academy in Rocester, Staffordshire, received the Duke of York Award for Technical Education from HRH The Duke of York, with many of the learners attending the ceremony at St James’s Palace.

The Award recognises the success of University Technical Colleges (UTC) learners who have pursued highly technical subjects including engineering, health sciences, advanced manufacturing and computer science.  It reflects the unique specialist education young people receive at UTCs which offers academic, technical and practical learning.

Nomination for the Duke of York Award for Technical Education is based on successfully completing a process of work experience placements, academic achievement and development of workplace skills together with a rigorous assessment interview.

HRH The Duke of York said:

“I congratulate all of you who are at the start of your technical careers and this award recognises the achievements you’ve made so far. Your UTC has given you a technical grounding which is second to none. I look to you all to take this forward so that this country has the advanced technical skills it needs for the future.”

Lord Baker, Chair, Baker Dearing Educational Trust, the charity which promotes ad sustains UTCs said:

“The Duke of York Award for Technical Education provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the individual achievements of UTC learners and the value of technical education. These young people represent some of best technical talent in the country which is essential if we’re to prosper as a nation.”
