Due to the structured nature of the curriculum, only one option will be available to each learner. While every effort will be made to accommodate each learner’s first-choice option, should demand exceed capacity, we will refer to the additional preferences you have ranked. For this reason, please consider your choices carefully and rank them in order of genuine preference.
This page contains brief details of each of the options available at The JCB Academy for Y10 learners in the 2025/26 academic year.
All learners will study the subjects listed below which are equivalent to a minimum of seven GCSEs overall:
- English Language (GCSE)
- English Literature (GCSE)
- Mathematics (GCSE)
- Science (GCSE)*
- Business (GCSE)
- Engineering Manufacture (Level 2)¹
- Physical Education (non-examined)
- Practical Skills (non-examined)
* The majority of learners will complete combined science (worth two GCSEs), with some choosing triple science (separate sciences, worth three GCSEs).
The remainder of the curriculum is split up into two blocks.
Block 1 (GCSE or Level 2 qualification):
All learners must pick one option from the list below.
- Triple Science (GCSE)
- Programmable Systems (Level 2)
- Engineering Design (Level 2)
- 3D Art & Design (Level 2)
- Enterprise (Level 2)
Block 2 (Non-GCSE or Level 2 qualification):
Learners do not have to pick subjects from this list, they will experience all of them on a rotation basis throughout the year. These subjects do not lead to a qualification.

- Sports Leadership
- Sports Science
- Electronics
- Engineering Drafting
- Mechanical Design
- Reading/creative writing
- Literacy
All learners will have the opportunity to complete eight GCSEs (or Level 2 qualifications) in total including an option subject. Further details on the GCSE and Level 2 qualifications that are available as optional subjects are given on the following pages.
