The Harper Adams Challenge is an annual programme that immerses Year 9 learners at The JCB Academy in weeks of hands-on engineering, culminating in an exciting final at Harper Adams University. Designed to inspire creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, the challenge reflects The JCB Academy’s commitment to real-world learning experiences.
The Challenge Journey
Over several weeks, learners work in teams to build and optimise a LEGO Technic Audi RS Q e-tron vehicle. This phase combines technical skill development with collaborative problem-solving, as learners bring their designs to life. Teams test and refine their cars in preparation for the final, focusing on performance, precision, and innovation.
The programme teaches learners to apply engineering concepts, such as mechanics and electronics, in a practical setting, while also fostering critical soft skills like teamwork, time management, and resilience.
The Grand Final at Harper Adams University
The challenge culminates in a thrilling final event at Harper Adams University, where learners are judged in two main areas:
1.RC Demo – Mastering the Obstacle Course
Teams navigate their LEGO Technic Audi RS Q e-tron vehicles through a demanding obstacle track. Points are awarded for successfully completing challenges such as gradients, side slopes, rail bridges, and stepping stones. Manoeuvrability, speed, and precision are key, with penalties applied for errors, adding to the tension and excitement of the competition.
2.Team Presentation – Sharing the Journey
Teams present their experiences and learning journey to a panel of judges, focusing on:
- Discovery: New skills and ideas explored during the project.
- Innovation: Creative approaches to overcoming challenges.
- Impact: Applying knowledge to achieve success.
- Inclusion: Demonstrating teamwork and respect for all members.
- Fun: Celebrating achievements and enjoying the process.
The competition concludes with an awards ceremony, where the top-performing teams are recognised for their engineering prowess, creativity, and teamwork.
What Learners Gain
The Harper Adams Challenge provides a unique learning opportunity, equipping learners with skills that extend far beyond the classroom:
- Practical Engineering Knowledge: Building and optimising their vehicles deepens learners’ understanding of engineering concepts.
- Problem-Solving and Creativity: Overcoming obstacles and refining designs fosters innovative thinking.
- Teamwork and Communication: Collaborating in teams enhances interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Presentation Skills: Sharing their journey builds confidence and public speaking abilities.
Why It Matters
The Harper Adams Challenge exemplifies The JCB Academy’s commitment to preparing learners for careers in engineering, business, and beyond. By engaging in hands-on, collaborative projects, learners develop essential skills to thrive in higher education, apprenticeships, and the workplace.
