Science

Our Intent

At The JCB Academy, our Science curriculum is designed to inspire the next generation of engineers, innovators, and business leaders through a deep understanding of scientific principles and their application in real-world contexts. We aim to develop learners who are curious, analytical, and resilient; equipped to solve complex problems and contribute to technological and industrial advancement.

Our Science lessons provide high-quality learning experiences that build scientific knowledge, practical skills, and critical thinking, enabling learners to succeed in their chosen next steps, whether that be college, sixth form, university, apprenticeships, or employment. Learners will explore how science underpins engineering, manufacturing, and business innovation, fostering an appreciation of its role in shaping the modern world.

The Science department also nurtures resilience, teamwork, and leadership through collaborative investigations, industry-linked projects, and problem-solving challenges. Learners will learn to question, hypothesize, and evaluate evidence, developing confidence in applying scientific principles to real-world scenarios.

What Learners Will Study

At GCSE level, learners study Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with a strong emphasis on practical application and industrial relevance. The course builds on prior learning from Key Stage 3 and prepares learners for further study in science, engineering, and related disciplines.

Content Areas:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Learners gain transferable skills such as data analysis, logical reasoning, and effective communication, essential for success in technical and business environments.

Examinations

Exam Board: AQA

There are two pathways for GCSE Science:

  • Combined Science
      • Six examination papers (1 hr 15 mins each) across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
      • Each paper is equally weighted (33⅓%)
  • Triple Science
      • Two examination papers each in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (1 hr 45 mins each)
  • Tiered Entry:
  • Combined Science: Foundation (Grades 1–5) and Higher (Grades 4–9)
  • Triple Science: Foundation (Grades 1–5) and Higher (Grades 3–9)

Enrichment and Industry Links

Learners have 9 lessons per fortnight, covering GCSE content and engaging in projects that apply scientific knowledge to real-world industry contexts. Examples include:

  • Year 9: Acting as Forensic Scientists and building rollercoasters linked to physics principles
  • Year 10 & 11: Industry-based challenges that connect science to engineering and manufacturing

Homework

  • Year 9: 20 minutes weekly (Sparx Science)
  • Year 10: 20 minutes weekly (Sparx Science)
  • Year 11: 20 minutes weekly (Sparx Science), plus independent revision and GCSE exam papers

Assessment

Learners complete regular Progress Checks (low-stakes tests) to monitor understanding, alongside longer in-class tests assessing cumulative knowledge.
