Engineering Apprentice – Advanced Level 3

Unilathe, a contract precision engineering company was established 45 years ago with one lathe (hence Unilathe) in a tiny workshop in Stoke on Trent. It has developed since that time such that it now has 110 employees and a total of 70 machine tools, offering the entire range of turning, milling and fabrication services to its customers. The Company supplies into the Off-Highway, Oil and Gas, Rail, Mining and Aerospace sectors and is a tier 1 and tier 2 supplier into OEM customers in each sector. Whilst it has remained close to its roots, it now operates from a 4.5 acre site at Ford Green Business Park near to Smallthorne, Stoke on Trent which it owns.

Gain a general understanding of electrical and mechanical engineering principles through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom/workshop-based training in conjunction with The JCB Academy. You will apply safe systems of working, apply proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering/manufacturing problems.

A Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship is a program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction that will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to work as an engineering technician. The apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete and will lead to nationally recognised qualifications. The engineering technician apprenticeship covers a range of topics, including:

  • engineering principles
  • technical mathematics
  • computer-aided design (CAD)
  • mechanical and electrical engineering

Apprentices will also learn about manufacturing processes, quality control, and maintenance, as well as health and safety regulations. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you will be able to work independently as engineering technician and may be able to progress to higher-level roles within the company.

The apprenticeship standard may also involve the completion of a portfolio of evidence, which includes assessments of the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and competences acquired during the course of the apprenticeship.

The training provided in this apprenticeship standard will be tailored to the specific needs of the employer and the individual apprentice, with the goal of equipping the apprentice with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively as an engineering technician.
